In Tibet, a thangka (which is a painted or an embroidered Buddhist image) was traditionally used in monasteries but also in private household altars. Huge ceremonial thangkas were shown on buildings and carried around in ceremonial processions during high holdidays. Traveling monks and teachers also favored smaller scroll paintings because they were easily rolled and transported easily.

Thangkas served as important teaching tools depicting motifs such as the life of the Buddha, great teachers, deities, and bodhisattvas. To the Tibtean Buddhists the painting actually represent the the deity or the master depicted, demanding the same respect and veneration as the actual deity or master.
